Assignements due April 10th and April 15th

Hi all,

Last two assignments:

Due April 10th:
Update a previous, non-career topic. That's it. You have a lot of freedom on how you want to approach this, but just make sure that the information is more current than the information available at the date of the original assignment.

Due April 15th:
Update your career plan. Be specific, including your current planned, path.

Have fun!

Assignment due April 4, 2012

There are two sectors of the aerospace industry that have undefined futures (more undefined than others, I should say) - the space sector and the UAV sector. Your assignment for this week is to select one of these and answer the following questions:

1) What is the current status of this sector of the industry?
2) What are the issues in these sectors that must be evaluated while moving towards the future?
3) What is the 5-10 year outlook for this sector?
4) What is/will the government's involvement be in this sector?
5) What are possible career opportunities in this sector (be specific, which may require you to find actual job descriptions)?

Remember that you only need to answer these questions for either the space OR UAV industry; not both.
As always, enjoy.

Assignment due March 25, 2012

There has been a lot of talk over the past few weeks about the "Export-Import Bank" and its involvement in aircraft financing.

1) What is the Export-Import Bank?
2) What is its relation to the aviation industry?
3) Why has it been in the news lately?
4) What is the ATA stance on this? What about Boeing?

Have fun! I'll be doing the research right along with you as this is a very current topic.

Assignment due March 19, 2012

I feel that last week's topic of the FAA Reauthorization Bill recapped a lot of the current aviation topics that we have been discussing. Let's focus a little more on careers this week. One career sector that may not be represented through a guest speaker this semester is the corporate aviation sector.  For this weeks assignment, you have two options:

Option One:

-Select a specific corporate aviation company.
-Contact that company and find out the following:
-General details about the company (who do they fly for, what planes, how many planes, how
many employees, company history etc.). You may be able to find this kind of information from
                their website.
-What career opportunities does that company offer for your degree (management or flight)
-List those job descriptions, required qualifications, salary and any other interesting information
                about those jobs.

Option Two:
China's corporate sector is poised to grow exponentially in the next few years.

                -Why?
-Give details including an historical overview of the Chinese corporate industry.
-How does this growth tie into (if it does) possible job opportunities for you - directly or
                indirectly?

As always,
Have fun!

Assignment due February 12

We watched a documentary called "Flying Cheap". This documentary is about the regional airline industry, focusing on two aspects. First, there is a discussion of the Colgan accident and factors that may have contributed to the accident. Second, the documentary presents information about the career of a regional pilot.

Keeping this documentary in mind, please answer the following questions:

1) What is the specific job and company in the aviation industry that you would like to end up at? You must be specific on both to receive full-credit for this question. Remember - you have the freedom to change down the road...

2) Provide a basic description of the job and company that you listed in 1).

3) Are there any safety/liability concerns with the job you listed in 1)? If so, what are they and how do you plan on mitigating these concerns? (*Hint: there are always concerns in this industry.)

4) I proposed that one theme in the events that led up to the Colgan accident was the lack of professionalism.  Answer the following three questions related to professionalism:

    * 1) Define professionalism in your own words.

    * 2) List two ways in which lack of professionalism was demonstrated in this documentary. Remember: Both pilots and management can lack professionalism.

    * 3) List two specific ways you plan on maintain and expand your level of professionalism once you are employed in the job that you listed in 1). These ways must be independent of the requirements of the job.

Have fun!

Assignment due February 5

It's hard to describe the future business models of the airline industry without using the word "merger". This assignment will focus on past, current and future airline mergers.

1) Describe a post-1978 merger. Include basic details, such as name of the companies, reason for the merge, challenges of the merger and consequences or benefits of the merger (such as furloughs or new routes, for example).

2) Describe a current merger - i.e. one that is in the process. Some choices would be United/Continental or Southwest/AirTran, but you aren't limited to these choices if you can find others. Answer the same questions listed in 1).

3) Describe the future of American Airlines. What lead to bankruptcy? Who's interested in merging with them and why? What do you predict for the future of this company?

4) Looking at these mergers throughout history, how do you see them affecting your future - either in aviation management or as a pilot. Keep in mind- you don't have to have interest directly in the airlines to answer this question.

Have fun!

Assignment due January 29th

We all know the major players in commercial aircraft manufacturing - Airbus and Boeing. Both have developed and produced new aircraft in recent years - B787, A380, B747-8 and, currently in development, the A350.

Please answer/complete the following in this week's assignment:

1) Write a brief statement about each aircraft. Basic stats (long haul/short haul, wide/narrow body, etc..), current status (in development, currently in production), what makes this aircraft different than previous aircraft from that manufacturer and anything else that may be noteworthy about the aircraft.

2) Based on these current aircraft and the current status of these manufacturers and the industry, who do you foresee taking the lead in commercial jet manufacturing and why?

3) There is potential third manufacturer trying to make their debut in China. Identify the name of this company as well as the aircraft that they are currently developing.

4) Do you feel that the company you identified in #3 will ever be a direct competitor with Boeing and Airbus? Why or why not?

The usual parameters for this assignment. Try to focus on original thought and not just rephrasing ideas for class discussion.

Have fun!

Assignment due January 22nd

On December 21st, 2011 the FAA issued the new flight and duty rules. This change in legislation was a result of the multiple and complex issues brought up as a result of the Colgan accident in 2009. The following is a press release from the FAA detailing key points of the new rule - FAA Press Release. Please address the following questions in this week's assignment:

1) Which of the key points has the potential to have the largest impact on the safety of the industry and why? Be specific.
2) Using the key point you selected in #1, discuss how this is a change from the previous regulation. If you have selected Fatigue Risk Management Systems, discuss how companies were managing fatigue prior to this regulation.
3) Discuss how the change in the regulation (the specific one that you addressed in the above questions) will have a financial impact on the industry.
4) Do you agree with the exemption of cargo carriers? Why or why not? If you disagree, what is your solution to the financial impact of cargo carrier compliance? If you agree, what is your solution to the fatigue issues that continue to exist within the cargo industry?

Make sure you address all points. Be specific on all answers, avoiding subjective words such as "a lot", "big", "not much", etc.. This assignment will probably require at least a couple of hours of research and writing. Also be sure to include a link (not the link in this post) from a reputable site and integrate your link with a description in your post.

Have fun and learn lots!

Assignment due January 18th

Your first assignment is to create a blog following these steps:

1) Go to www.blogspot.com.

2) Hit the "Get Started" button.

3) Fill out the required information. Your "display name" is the name that will come up as your signature when you comment on other blogs. You can use your actual name and pick something else. Remember to keep it professional and preferably aviation-related if you choose not to use your actual name. Also, you will be required to create a blog name (the title that will show at the top of the blog) and blog address. Remember, keep it professional and aviation related. It may take you a few tries to come up with something that isn't already taken.

4) Select a template. Don't worry if you don't like the choices.  You will be able to change this at some point if you'd like.

5) You are now ready to write your first post!  In the upper right corner, select "New Post". Title it and type away.  Your first assignment is to 1) Create the blog and send me the address and 2) Write an introduction blog post. The basics - how you got into aviation, where you are going in aviation (3-5 paragraphs), and current topics that interest you and why. No links required in this assignment. Please complete this assignment by January 18th.

On January 18th I will pass out a list of all the blogs as well as give the first "real" topic for the following week.

Introduction

Hello Everyone!

Welcome to AVT 422 Senior Seminar! My goal in this course is to give you some practical and useful tools that hopefully will give you an edge as you venture into your aviation careers...or any careers for that matter.  One way I have decided to do this is through the social media of a blog. I know a several people in the aviation world who have utilized blogs to advance their careers in various ways. Like other social media tools, (such as Facebook and Twitter) writing, reading and commenting on blogs allows you to create a social network of aviation professionals that you may not have otherwise created. Also, this is yet another thing you can put on your resume - "aviation blog writer". I'm not kidding. As long as you keep the topics professional, many employers would be quite impressed with this initiative.

Each week I will assign an aviation topic - which I will post on this blog. In addition to career development, I also use senior seminar as a course to discuss current and global topics in aviation.  Each week you will be required to do the following:

1) Write a post about the topic, approximately 3-5 paragraphs. I will usually provide a list of 4-5 questions that you need to answer through research of the topic. In addition, opinions are encouraged. Proper grammar and spelling is expected - remember that all of your class peers (and, if you wish, other aviation professionals and employers) will have access to your blog. Posts must be up by the Sunday before class to allow time for peers to read and comment.

2) You must include at least one link about the topic in your blog.  The link must be to a reputable site. Be sure to provide an introduction to your link.

3) Each week, in addition to your own post, you are required to read and comment on at least 3 of your classmates' blogs. Please email me these comments (indicating which blog they were posted to) by Wednesday before class to receive full credit.

4) I will give feedback on your post each week as a comment. Likewise, feel free to leave my comments about the assignment.

5) Come to class each week prepared to have an in-depth discussion of the topic.

Have fun! Seriously, I think you will enjoy this.
